Early life and education
Esra Bilgiç was born on October 14, 1992, in Ankara, Turkey’s capital city. She grew up in Ankara’s educated, cosmopolitan milieu and pursued academic studies at two of the country’s most prestigious universities — Ankara University and Bilkent University — where she developed a range of intellectual interests alongside her growing ambition in the arts. She was just twenty years old when she secured the role that would define her early career: Halime Sultan in the epic historical drama Diriliş: Ertuğrul. Her combination of classical Anatolian beauty, composed screen presence, and commitment to the emotional truth of her character quickly earned her a devoted following that extended far beyond Turkey into South Asia, the Middle East, and beyond.
Awards and recognition
Esra Bilgiç’s international fame was cemented by Diriliş: Ertuğrul (2014–2019), one of the highest-rated Turkish dramas in history. She was awarded international fan recognition from across the Middle East and South Asia in 2018, reflecting her extraordinary cross-cultural resonance. She subsequently starred in the crime drama Ramo (2020–2021) — winning the Best Actress Award at the Golden Butterfly Awards in 2020 — and in Kanunsuz Topraklar (2022), which further demonstrated her range. She was named one of Turkey’s most influential social media personalities in 2021 and became the global brand ambassador for several international fashion and luxury brands in 2023. Her personal life received public attention through her marriage to Turkish footballer Gökhan Töre (2017–2019), which ended in divorce. She was raised Muslim.
