Early life and education
Hatice Tuba Büyüküstün was born on July 5, 1982, in Istanbul, Turkey. She pursued an artistic education at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, studying Stage Design and Costume — a discipline that trained her eye for visual composition, period aesthetics, and theatrical space. Though she came to acting from a design rather than a performance program, this training gave her an unusually sophisticated understanding of how costumes, staging, and physical space interact with character, contributing to the visual intelligence and poise that define her screen presence. She later married director Onur Saylak in 2011 and the couple had twin daughters before divorcing in 2017. She has since raised her daughters independently while maintaining one of the most demanding careers in Turkish entertainment.
Awards and recognition
Tuba Büyüküstün achieved her first major television recognition with the romantic drama Asi (2007, IMDb 7.3), and built on that success with Kara Para Aşk (Black Money Love, 2014, IMDb 7.5) — a crime-romance that became one of Turkey’s most internationally broadcast series. In 2015 she became the first Turkish actress to receive a nomination for the International Emmy Award for Best Actress, recognized for her performance in the thriller 20 Dakika (IMDb 7.1). She followed with the blockbuster romantic drama Cesur ve Güzel (Brave and Beautiful, IMDb 7.3, 2016–2017) and Sefirin Kızı (Ambassador’s Daughter, 2019–2020). Her face is recognized across dozens of markets in the Middle East, the Balkans, Latin America, and beyond — a global reach that is unmatched by nearly any other Turkish television actress. She has continued working in major television and streaming productions through 2025.
