Early life and education
Bergüzar Korel was born on August 27, 1982, in Istanbul, Turkey. She came from a family with deep roots in Turkish cinema — her father is the legendary actor Tanju Korel — which meant she grew up immersed in the world of storytelling and performance. She studied Theatre at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in Istanbul, one of Turkey’s most prestigious arts institutions, where she developed the technical precision and emotional range that would define her career. Standing 180 cm tall, she carries a commanding presence on screen, and her striking appearance combined with her formal training quickly opened doors in both film and television.
Awards and recognition
Bergüzar Korel first made headlines internationally with Kurtlar Vadisi: Irak in 2006 before delivering a career-defining performance as the timeless Şehrazat in Binbir Gece (One Thousand and One Nights, 2006–2009) — a role that earned her the Golden Butterfly Best Actress Award in 2009 and turned her into a pan-regional star across the Middle East. She married her Binbir Gece co-star Halit Ergenç in 2009, and the couple have since become one of Turkey’s most celebrated acting duos. She continued her acclaimed run in the period epic Karadayı (2012–2015) and the wartime drama Vatanım Sensin (2016–2018), and returned to screens in Stuck Apart (2021) and the 2024 series Annem Ankara. Her legacy as one of Turkey’s finest dramatic actresses remains firmly established.
