Biography
Early life and education
Murat Ünalmış was born on April 23, 1981, in Kayseri, Turkey. Before he ever stood in front of a camera, he stood on a basketball court — playing for Fenerbahçe’s youth team and eventually representing Turkey’s under-20 national squad. His athletic career gave him discipline, teamwork instincts, and an acute awareness of physical space, qualities that would serve him well in acting. He pursued a degree in Communication at Marmara University, then formalized his transition to performance by studying at Academy Istanbul. His path from professional athlete to serious dramatic actor is one of the more compelling origin stories in Turkish entertainment.
Awards and recognition
Murat Ünalmış built a steady television career through series like Yer Gök Aşk (2010–2012) and several films, but his career reached its apex with the massively popular period drama Bir Zamanlar Çukurova (Terra Amara, 2018–2021), where his portrayal of the brooding Demir Yaman became iconic across Turkey, the Middle East, and eventually Italy — where the series aired to record ratings on Canale 5. The role earned him the Actor of the Year title at the Türkiye Lider Marka Ödülleri in 2019, Best Actor at the İzmit International Film Festival in 2020, Best Actor at the Turkey Youth Awards in 2020, and Best Male Actor of the Year at the Altın Çilek Awards in Mersin. He has since continued on screens in the FOX drama Gülcemal (2023–present) as Gülcemal Şahin.
