Biography
Meryem Uzerli is a Turkish-German actress who became one of the most instantly recognisable faces in the history of Turkish television through a single, towering role. Born in Kassel, Germany on August 12, 1983, to a Turkish father and a German mother, she grew up navigating two cultures before eventually choosing Istanbul as her home — and finding a role that turned that bicultural background into a gift.
Early life and education
Meryem Uzerli was raised in Hamburg, where she attended the Freie Waldorf School and later trained as an actress at the Schauspiel Studio Frese — one of Hamburg’s respected acting institutions. Her training in Germany gave her a rigorous technical foundation, and her multilingualism — German, Turkish and some English — made her a versatile performer from the start. She moved between German television work and Turkish productions before landing the role that would define her career.
Her personal life has been closely watched by the public. She has two children: her daughter Lara Jemine and a son born in 2021. She has remained unmarried. She also pursues philanthropic interests and has been involved in various humanitarian initiatives.

Meryem Uzerli’s career was transformed by her casting as Hürrem Sultan — the Ukrainian-born slave who became the most powerful woman in the Ottoman Empire — in the historical drama Muhteşem Yüzyıl (Magnificent Century, 2011–2013). The role, broadcast in over 70 countries and watched by more than 400 million people worldwide, made her an international star overnight. She won the Golden Butterfly Award for Best Actress in 2012, along with multiple other accolades including Best Drama Actress at the Turkish Antalya Television Awards (2013) and Best International Actress at the Beirut International Awards Festival (2016) for her work in Eşkiya Dünyaya Hükümdar Olmaz, in which she played Suzi. She also featured in Annemin Yarası (2016), Cingöz Recai (2017) and the film Kovan (2018) as Ayşe, which won her Best Actress at both the Chelsea Film Festival and the Cana Dorada Film Festival in 2020. Her most recent television work includes the web series RU (2024) as Reyan.
