Storyline
During the Korean War, a Turkish soldier named Süleyman finds a five-year-old Korean girl alone in the wreckage of a village. He names her Ayla, teaches her Turkish, and looks after her for the fifteen months they are stationed there. When the time comes to leave, he cannot bring her with him. What follows is a sixty-year search.
Ayla is a true story, and the film treats it with extraordinary care. It is not a war movie — the war is the context, not the subject. The subject is a relationship between a soldier and a child that neither of them ever forgot, and the film earns every emotion it asks for. It scored Turkey’s entry for the 2018 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and an IMDb score of 8.0 reflects how genuinely it moved people.
