Biography
Early life and education
Merjem Šiljak was born on March 9, 2000, in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina — a city whose complex history and multicultural character have produced some of the Balkans’ most compelling artistic talents. She trained at the Sarajevo Academy of Performing Arts (Akademija scenskih umjetnosti Sarajevo), one of the region’s most respected institutions for theatre and screen training, where she developed the technical foundation in classical performance that distinguishes conservatory-trained actors from self-trained peers. Her training in Sarajevo immersed her in both the Central European theatrical tradition and the specific emotional directness of Bosnian performance culture — qualities that, combined with her striking physical presence, made her stand out when she began working in Turkish-language productions. She divides her time between Bosnia and Turkey and has rapidly established herself as one of the most talked-about new faces in Turkish television.
Awards and recognition
Merjem Šiljak began her screen career in Bosnian productions, including Na rubu pameti (2022) and Tender (2022), before making her Turkish television debut in the comedy series Koyu Beyaz on TRT tabii (2023). Her breakthrough came in 2025 with the international feature A Life’s Worth, and then with the casting that would define her public profile: the female lead role of Destina (later Hünad Hatun) in the historical drama Aşk ve Taht (Love and Throne, atv, 2026), opposite Akın Akınözü as Sultan Alaeddin. Starring in a major historical franchise on one of Turkey’s top-rated channels — with a co-star whose Hercai fan base spans dozens of countries — gave Merjem global visibility almost overnight. At just 26, she is one of the youngest performers ever to carry the female lead of a major Turkish primetime historical epic, and her career is only beginning.
