Early life and education
Demet Evgar was born on May 18, 1980, in Manisa, a city in western Turkey steeped in Ottoman history. She grew up alongside her brother Yiğit Evgar, who would later become a film and television director — a sibling partnership that placed the arts at the center of family life. She pursued formal training at the Theatre Department of Istanbul University’s State Conservatory, where she developed the rigorous stage discipline that has defined her entire career. Beyond the conservatory, she co-founded the innovative theatre troupes Pangar and Multi Arts Production, channeling her training into creative ventures that gave her both artistic independence and a platform for adventurous work across genres. Her parents are Levent and Bingül Evgar.
Awards and recognition
Demet Evgar built her name across the full breadth of Turkish performing arts — stage, film, and television — making her one of the industry’s genuinely versatile figures. Her most celebrated television work includes the long-running romantic comedy 1 Kadın 1 Erkek, the prison drama Avlu, and the acclaimed series Alev Alev, as well as film roles in Yahşi Batı and Beyza’nın Kadınları. She won the Actress of the Year award in 2010, an accolade recognized across the Turkish entertainment industry. Her stage work has been equally praised; she has trained generations of younger actors through her theatre companies and teaching engagements. She married actor Levent Babataş in 2022, and their daughter was born in August of the same year. Demet is widely regarded as one of Turkish entertainment’s most complete performers — equally at home in comedy, drama, and music.
