Selim Bayraktar

Selim Bayraktar is an Iraqi-Turkish actor widely recognised for his portrayal of Sümbül Ağa in the globally successful historical drama Muhteşem Yüzyıl (The Magnificent Century). Born on June 17, 1975, in Kirkuk, Iraq, he grew up in Turkey and built a career that has taken him from theatre to some of Turkish television’s most prominent productions.

Early life and education

Bayraktar studied at Hacettepe University, where he trained in the performing arts and developed the technical range that would serve him across decades of character work. His rise in Turkish entertainment was steady, shaped by theatre experience before he transitioned fully to television and film. The role of Sümbül Ağa in Muhteşem Yüzyıl (2011–2014) proved transformative, earning him recognition across Turkey and in the series’ large international audience. The character — a complex, often darkly comedic harem official — showcased Bayraktar’s ability to inhabit morally ambiguous figures with intelligence and depth. He returned to high-profile historical work with a role as Çandarlı Halil Pasha in Mehmed: Fetihler Sultanı (2024). His first marriage to musician Bihter Bayraktar ended in divorce.

Awards and recognition

No major individual awards have been officially confirmed for Selim Bayraktar. His performance as Sümbül Ağa in Muhteşem Yüzyıl remains his most widely celebrated work, a role that earned him an enduring place in Turkish television history.
