Hande Erçel is one of the most recognisable faces in Turkish entertainment — an actress and model whose combination of striking looks, genuine screen charisma and a string of well-chosen roles has made her one of the most-followed Turkish celebrities internationally. Born in Bandırma, Balıkesir on November 24, 1993, she has built a career that now extends well beyond Turkey’s borders.
Early life and education
Hande Erçel grew up in Bandırma before eventually moving to Istanbul to pursue her career. She studied at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, focusing on traditional Turkish arts — a choice that reflects an interest in craft and aesthetics that goes beyond the purely commercial. Her mother, Aylin Erçel, passed away, and her loss has been something Hande has spoken about in interviews with notable candour. She has one sister, Gamze Erçel.
Her acting career began in 2013 and accelerated rapidly. She has been consistently described as one of Turkey’s highest-paid actresses, reportedly earning between $50,000 and $100,000 per show.
Awards and recognition
Hande Erçel’s early career included roles in Güneşin Kızları (2015–2016) as the rebellious teenager Selin Yılmaz and in the popular romantic drama Aşk Laftan Anlamaz (Love Doesn’t Understand Words, 2016–2017) as Hayat Uzun Sarsılmaz. She went on to play Müjde Akay in the crime drama Halka (The Ring, 2019) and the complex protagonist in Azize (2019). Her global breakthrough came with Sen Çal Kapımı (Love Is in the Air, 2020–2021) as Eda Yıldız — a role that earned her enormous international following across Europe and the Arab world. She subsequently starred as the prosecutor Leyla Gediz in Bambaşka Biri (Another Love, 2023–2024). Her awards include the prestigious Golden Butterfly Award for Best Actress and multiple Turkey Youth Awards. She remains one of the few Turkish television actors to have achieved true crossover fame.
