Biography
Early life and education
Cihan Ünal was born on January 22, 1946, in Erzincan, a city in eastern Turkey with a rich cultural and musical tradition. He moved toward the performing arts in his formative years, pursuing a rigorous formal education at the Ankara State Conservatory’s Theatre Department — one of Turkey’s most distinguished institutions for dramatic training. He graduated in 1971 and immediately joined the Ankara State Theatre, where he spent years mastering the classical stage repertoire and developing the commanding presence that would define his career. In 1983 he married Türkan Şoray — widely known as the “Sultan of Turkish cinema” and one of the most iconic actresses in the country’s history — a union that placed him at the very center of Turkish cultural life until their divorce in 1987. Their daughter, Yağmur Ünal, grew up to become a producer and actress.
