Biography
Early life and education
Burak Sergen was born on February 9, 1961, in Ankara, Turkey, and came of age in the capital during a period of cultural and political intensity that shaped a generation of serious artists. He pursued formal dramatic training at the Ankara State Conservatory, graduating in 1984 and immediately entering the professional theatre world as a member of the Ankara State Theatre. There he built the classical foundation — precision of language, physical authority, emotional depth — that distinguishes state-theatre-trained performers from those who have come through other routes. His dedication to the stage remained constant even as television offered wider audiences, and he has consistently worked across both disciplines throughout his career. In 2024 he married Gizem Şağban; they have one child.
Awards and recognition
Burak Sergen’s most celebrated television performance came as Galip Kozcuoğlu in Kara Sevda (Endless Love, 2015–2017) — rated 8.4 on IMDb and one of the most internationally distributed Turkish series in history. His commanding portrayal of the patriarch villain anchored the show’s dramatic tension and helped establish it as a global phenomenon. He followed with Haluk Güçlü in the hit drama Sadakatsiz (Unfaithful, 2020–2022) and Rızvan Leto in Hudutsuz Sevda (2022–2023), demonstrating that his appetite for complex supporting and lead characters had not diminished across six decades of professional life. His earlier film work includes notable credits such as Istanbul Beneath My Wings (1996) and Beans (2000). He was honored for lifetime contributions to Turkish performing arts in 2024.
